New mini coopers in a short supply?

I want to purchase a new mini cooper but the dealer said that because of the events in japan, they are unable to custom order any coopers with automatic transmission so my best bet is to choose one of the current ones on the lot or a few that are being shipped in right now. I just want to know if that is indeed the case or just a ploy from the sellers to close the deal?
