A cup is 8 oz, right?

I was taught that a cup (either wet or dry ingredients) was 8 oz. As I was shopping I happened to notice on the label of some shredded cheese that it said that it was a "whole cup" and that it read 4 oz instead of 8 oz. Is this some marketing ploy to make it seem like your getting more?
